This is the true story of Jessica Lal, a model working in Delhi. She died after being shot at point blank for refusing to serve alcohol to an influential political figure in the city. The film is based on the struggle of Jessica’s sister Sabrina and her fight for justice. This drama thriller was a hit and won Filmfare Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role.
2. Airlift
Based on a real-life incident that took place during the Gulf War in the year 1990 during the Iraq-Kuwait war, the movie talks about an Indian businessman Ranjit Katyal, played by Akshay Kumar, who helped in saving 1,70,000 Indians from Kuwait. He was the only one who was able to arrange the repatriation of these Indians and the film captures the heroic story of this ambitious man.
3. Neerja
Another heart-touching biopic based on the life of Neerja Bhanot who was the youngest recipient of the Wonderful Courage Awards. The movie is highly appreciated for its strong female character and showcases her bravery when her flight was hijacked by terrorists. Neerja’s heroic act of alerting the authorities and displaying great intellect in the face of danger made her an undisputed heroine.
4. Super 30
Based on the life of mathematician Anand Kumar, the movie is the perfect example of how true grit for a goal coupled with strong determination can surpass challenges and move even the strongest of walls. Despite all the odds and disparaging background, Anand Kumar succeeded in educating underprivileged students from Bihar and transforming them into IIT entrance exam toppers.
5. Raazi
Based on the novel Calling Sehmat, the movie recounts to true story of a twenty-two-year-old Indian spy who gets married to Pakistani Army Officer Manzoor to pass critical information to the Indian government during the 1971 war between the two countries. Alia Bhatt who successfully essayed the role of Sehmat won critical acclaim and accolades for the character.
