Prem Chopra Talks On Rajesh Khanna & Amitabh Bachchan, How Only One Of Them Successfully Sustained His Stardom

It is widely known that Rajesh Khanna ruled Indian cinema and used to easily win hearts with his beautiful performances but at some period of time he was no longer a bankable star as he used to be and he tried to retain his old style which the audience didn’t accept it. While the moment Amitabh Bachchan entered Bollywood is still actively working as he switch to character roles at the right time. 

Talking about all this, Prem Chopra opened up in an interview with Bollywood Thikana, who is very famous for his negative role portrayals. He said in Hindi, “He tried to retain his old style, but the audience didn’t accept it. Those movies didn’t work. He could not face the fact that he wasn’t the superstar that he used to be. But Amitabh was different. He was a superstar for so many years, but he moved on to character roles at the right time. I am sometimes surprised, at this age, he is busier than he was before.”

Further talking about Rajesh Khanna also had a reputation of being always t ardy that no producer of any film could confront while considering his stature in the industry and recalling one story while shooting for ‘Haathi mere Saathi’.

The film’s producer was a bit tough but he couldn’t confront the superstar so he hired a man only for the purpose to beat him whenever Rajesh Khanna would show up late on the sets. Prem Chopra shared, “In Chennai, they are very punctual. If your call time is 9, you have to be on set by 8:30. Rajesh Khanna would show up at noon. Nobody could say anything to him. But when he would arrive, the producer would beat up this man he’d hired and yell at him in front of everybody. Rajesh Khanna got the hint, and started arriving on time a few days later.”

The actor had developed a habit of being late and several people in Bollywood were even fed up with his behaviour. Chopra said, “But Rajesh Khanna was Rajesh Khanna. The producers heavily depended on him. When he’d arrive on set some hours late, they would ask him if he wanted to have lunch first, but he’d always finish work first.”
