Not too long since India celebrated their two Oscar Winning films, SS Rajamouli’s RRR & Guneet Monga’s The Elephant Whisperers. Now India has begun the search for its official entry to the Oscars 2024. If the reports are to be believed, The Kerala Story, Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani and Zwigato among 22 other films are in contention to be India’s official entry this year.
According to the report by Hindustan Times, the committee has received over 22 entries from all over India on the basis of wide range of commercial, regional as well as serious cinema. The decision will be made by a 17-member jury, headed by filmmaker Girish Kasaravalli.
Anant Mahadevan’s The Storyteller (Hindi), Music School (Hindi), Mrs Chatterjee vs Norway (Hindi), 12th Fail (Hindi), Viduthalai Part 1 (Tamil), Ghoomer (Hindi), and Dasara (Telugu) are among the few films which are in contention.
Additions may also reportedly include Gadar 2, Vaalvi, Ab Toh Sab Bhagwan Bharose and Baap lyok. HT reported that the application for these movies has been sent, but the fee is yet to be sent.
The decision to pick India’s official entry to Oscars 2024 will be made by a 17-member jury, led by 14-time National Film Award recipient Girish Kasaravalli. The excited Oscar committee is in Chennai for the screenings. A source shared with HT, “The screening started yesterday, and would take a week as there is a huge pool of films to be watched and then they will decide. We can expect an announcement about the official entry from India next week.”
