Mahaan Movie Review – Vikram Electrifies The Gangster Drama With Brilliant Act

Shakun Batra has always succeeded in experimenting with different genre of films with his previous attempts - Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu and Kapoor & Sons and Gehraiyaan is yet another experiment which the talented director has embarked upon though he was almost there. The film may start of with a typical boy-meet-girl romance but ends on something which you will never ever thought of. Like most of the infidelity dramas, Gehraiyaan focuses on fatal attraction, intimacy, break-ups, fights, emotional drama followed by misunderstanding and colossal ending. While Gehraiyaan picks up the steam and has few engaging moments, especially the high-level meeting when Zain is trying to woo an investor and the climax but the movie adds nothing new to the genre and the resolution is unsatisfying. Gehriyaan ends on an abrupt note where I felt it could have an erotic thriller with solid twist and turns, though few were there but not enough to keep you grounded.

Gehraiyaan boast off some amazing production value followed by superb background score and astounding cinematography capturing the beautiful landscape of Goa. Hats off to the music director Kabeer Kathpalia (OAFF) and Savera Mehta for beautiful composition with "Doobey" pick from the lot. Performance wise, Deepika Padukone manages to get inside her character. Whether it's her initial half-distrustful tentativeness, her later sensual abandon or her never-ending ambivalence, Deepika's Alisha seems to be actually living the role in a way no one else matches, a way we can all connect to. The other performance was delivered by Ananya Panday who surprises with her honest and yet convincing act. Siddhant Chaturvedi was fine while Dhairya Karwa was good.
