OTT Platforms got a big advantage in 2020 as the pandemic situation due to COVID-19, created havoc in the Entertainment industry, putting dent into the film producer’s pocket.
It became the saving grace for many production houses and filmmakers, whose films were halted due to the pandemic situation. Netflix was one of biggest OTT player that rolled out in India in 2015. The US-based video streaming company became immensely popular after the successful web-series Sacred Games. Slowly, other OTT platforms like Amazon Prime, Disney+Hotstar, SONY LIV, Zee5, MXPlayer etc, started rolling out their services.
As the COVID-19 impact was severe shutting down cinema halls and theaters, audience started looking for other mediums to keep them entertained and the OTT giant ensured that they have the right content to keep the audience engaged. In order to keep the viewers occupied, the OTT platforms started offering different contents ranging from diverse genre including comedy drama, thriller, biopic and even animation flick.
As per Box Office India, Disney+Hotstar scored the brownie points as it got the privilege to stream IPL Cricket matches followed by Amazon Prime which streamed some recent blockbusters like Pushpa, Jai Bhim, Shershaah. Unfortunately, even with its quality content, Netflix was not able to tap the local market. Below are the top streaming OTT platforms of 2022 in terms of paid subscribers :-
