Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) workers, who are currently helping with the deadly wildfires in California, are been instructed to modify their language regarding gender and immigration, according to an email obtained by 404 Media.

The email, which was issued by the Trump administration, instructs employees to stop using the term "migrants" for undocumented immigrants and instead refer to them as "aliens." Moreover, it requests that the term "gender" be replaced with "sex," & "integration" be replaced with "assimilation." According to a 404 Media, the subject line of the email read as follows - "For Immediate Compliance."

The impact of this directive on FEMA's efforts to help families affected by the wildfires doesn't give clarification. The change has ignited concerns among FEMA staff, with 1 calling the email "the most 1984 email I've ever seen." "We're all just locked in to focus on response and recovery efforts," a FEMA employee told to the 404 Media.

That email also includes detailed guidance on how the officials should handle immigration matters. "While the following chart presents examples of terminology that should be replaced, it should not be considered to be comprehensive, particularly in the immigration space," the email said, further urging workers to consult their program counsel for additional languages. A chart with specific language guidelines for FEMA officials was also included.

This change in terminology is one of the part of the Trump administration's wider initiative to reshape the language used by federal agencies. The email came shortly after President Donald Trump signed an executive order titled "Defending Women from Gender Ideology Extremism and Restoring Biological Truth to the Federal Government," which directed the government employees to disregard "all radical gender ideology guidance, communication, policies, and forms."

The "terminology changes" were sent to FEMA staff in Region 9’s recovery division, which also covered California, Arizona, Nevada, Hawaii, & the U.S. Pacific Islands. The language adjustments mirror those imposed on ICE agents & the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) employees. FEMA is part of the DHS. Same notices have been issued over various federal agencies, including NASA.
