In a groundbreaking development, the US Department of Energy has finally granted an approval for a US company to collaborate with Indian entities in designing & building nuclear power plants in India.
This milestone marks a very important breakthrough in the India-US civil nuclear deal, which was 1st signed in 2007 by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh & President George W Bush.
After almost two decades of intense negotiations, meticulous discussions, & regulatory clearances, the US has finally agreed to India's terms. Earlier, US firms were only allowed to export nuclear reactors & equipment to India, without being involved in design work or manufacturing nuclear equipment in the nation. India had consistently focused the importance of domestic design, manufacturing, & technology transfer.
The approval, which was granted on March 26, 2025, opens the way for US and Indian companies to jointly produce Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) & their components. This achievement is seen as a big victory for Indian diplomacy, especially in the context of Russia's growing influence in the region.
