Hundreds of international students studying in the US have received notifications from the US Department of State (DOS), instructing them to self-deport because of the revocation of their F-1 visas (student visas) which are linked to campus activism.

This enforcement isn't restricted to students who directly participated in campus activism; even those who engaged with or expressed approval for 'anti-national' posts have also been included in these notifications.

Some of the Indian students may also be among those targeted for actions as trivial as sharing a social media post, as reported by The Times Of India, citing immigration attorneys who confirmed the situation. According to the latest Open Doors report, among the 1.1 million global students studying in the USA in 2023-24, 331,000 are Indian students.

This directive followed US Secretary of State Marco Rubio's announcement in relation to the cancellation of visas for several international students for purported anti-national activities.

"It might be more than 300 at this point. We do it every day. Every time I find one of these lunatics, I take away their visas...Every country in the world has a right to decide who comes in as a visitor and who doesn't," Rubio said at the press conference in Guyana on Thursday, without providing further details on which visas had been canceled.
