Amidst growing discussions on potential major changes within the Indian cricket team, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly considering the implementation of a performance-based pay system. This approach would allow the BCCI to deduct money from players if their performances fail of the expectations.

Following the recent outcomes in Test series against New Zealand and Australia, the Indian board is contemplating adopting a more corporate-like model where players are financially rewarded or penalized according to their performance. With the arrival of BCCI's new secretary, Devajit Saikia, and treasurer, Prabhtej Singh Bhatia, many changes are expected in the way the BCCI operates and manages its players. One of the significant shift could be the introduction of performance-linked pay.

"It was one of the suggestions given that players should be held accountable and if their performance is deemed not fit as per expectations, they should face variable pay-cuts," the Indian Express quoted this source as saying.

A performance-based system has already been established, where players featuring in the playing XI for more than 50% of Tests in a season since 2022-23 are rewarded with an incentive of Rs 30 lakh per match. Players who take part in at least 75% of the season's matches can earn Rs 45 lakh per game. This system's aim is to encourage players to prioritize Test cricket or specific white-ball formats.

The report also suggests that the team management believes many players don't value Test cricket as much as they should. There are concerns that the longest format is still being treated lightly, with the focus mainly remaining on excelling in white-ball formats.

"There was discussion whether the current players were a bit indifferent when India loses a Test match. The team management understands the value of Test cricket but many players don't give too much importance to it," a report quoted a source as saying.

The Indian team management has urged the BCCI to look after this issue and ensure that the next generation of cricketers prioritize the value of earning a Test cap over pursuing white-ball careers.
