A new major detail has emerged from last week's meeting of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), that was attended by Test and ODI captain Rohit Sharma and head coach Gautam Gambhir. It’s already well-known that talks around selecting Rohit’s successor for the leadership role have been ongoing, with Jasprit Bumrah being considered the top contender.

Anyhow, according to reports, Rohit informed the BCCI selectors and top officials that he wishes to continue as captain of both the Test and ODI teams for a few more months before totally retiring from international cricket. Dainik Jagran's report states that Rohit is not completely ready to hand over the leadership, even though Bumrah is emerging as a leading candidate for the role in the biggest format.

Even after facing recent form struggles, Rohit has informed the BCCI that he is not likely to pursue a longer international career after this year's Champions Trophy. In the meantime, the board has been asked to find a perfect successor to take over the captaincy for both formats.

If all goes well planned, Rohit might retire after the Champions Trophy’s conclusion.

However, BCCI officials and selectors are not entirely sure about appointing Bumrah as the permanent captain, looking at his injury concerns. Bumrah’s workload must be carefully looked after to prevent further fitness issues, which have affected his career. Therefore, the selectors are also looking out for alternative vice-captain options to support Bumrah.

Some reports suggest that the management does not want separate captains for Test and ODI formats. There was also some consideration of appointing Suryakumar Yadav as ODI captain, but since the T20I captain does not contemporarily feature in the 50-over side, this idea is not being worked upon.

Although appointing Bumrah as the leader for both Tests and ODIs might be effective, concerns over his continuous injuries are still going on. As a result, names like Rishabh Pant and Yashasvi Jaiswal have been included as potential candidates for the vice-captaincy role.
