What the BJP Said -
Previously this evening, Union Home Minister Amit Shah presented a huge list of properties he claimed were allocated for Waqf. This list comprised land belonging to temples, other religions, government entities, and many many more. His argument was: "You cannot donate someone else's property. You donate something which is yours."
This served to reinforce the government's assertion that important lands and properties have been appropriated by Waqf, and there were efforts made to protect other properties at the end moment. The government maintained that Waqf has now become a cover for land-grabbing.
Citing particular instances, Mr. Shah has noted that the Karnataka High Court had to intervene to halt the appropriation of 602 sq km by Waqf.
"Properties in (Delhi's) Lutyens zone went to Waqf, and they started taking over government land... In Tamil Nadu, a 400-year-old temple property was designated as Waqf's. Land for a five-star establishment was handed over to Waqf for 12,000 a month... Numerous properties affiliated with various religions were classified as Waqf property, including Chandra Shekhar Azad Park in Prayagraj," he stated furthermore.
Mr. Shah claimed that the revised Waqf bill would definitely play an extremely crucial role in preventing this. "This bill will protect property. Like ASI property, Tribal land, private property and for Waqf, you can only donate private, personal property and not the land of the community (village). This bill will bring transparency," he stated clearly.
Earlier, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju explained that a case ongoing since 1970 in Delhi involved several properties, including the old Parliament building. "The Delhi Waqf Board had claimed these... the case was in court but then the UPA denotified 123 properties and transferred them to the Waqf Board," he stated.
"If we had not introduced this amendment today, even the building we are sitting in could have been claimed as Waqf property. If Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government had not assumed power... several other properties would also have been de-notified," the minister cleared..
Mr. Shah attributed the current situation to the UPA government, stating that the Waqf regulations were rectified just days before the 2014 general elections.
