Various pro-Kannada organizations have announced a 12-hour bandh in Karnataka on Saturday, March 22, from 6 AM to 6 PM. The shutdown is being observed in response to the alleged assault on a bus conductor in Belagavi, sparking outrage among activists and locals. A Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) conductor was reportedly assaulted for not conversing in Marathi, further intensifying ongoing tensions between linguistic communities in the region. On Thursday, Karnataka's Deputy Chief Minister, DK Shivakumar, stated that the Siddaramaiah-led government would not endorse the bandh.
He said, "We will make them (the organisations) understand that it is not the right course of action, as it will impact students whose exams have already begun."
Authorities plan to deploy additional security forces in Belagavi and other sensitive areas across the state. Commuters, business owners, and students have been advised to expect disruptions to their daily routines due to the bandh. Last month, a KSRTC bus conductor traveling from Belagavi to Balekundri was reportedly attacked by members of pro-Marathi groups for not speaking Marathi.
In response to the incident, inter-state bus services between Karnataka and Maharashtra were suspended. The assault reignited discussions about the longstanding language dispute between the two states.
After India gained independence, Maharashtra laid claim to Belagavi—now part of Karnataka—citing its large Marathi-speaking population. Since then, linguistic tensions have persisted along the border of the two states. In response to the recent incident, Kannada Okkuta, a coalition of several pro-Kannada organizations, has called for the bandh. They are demanding strict action against pro-Marathi activists for allegedly inciting violence and disrupting communal harmony. Additionally, they have urged authorities to impose a ban on pro-Marathi organizations.
