In a recent interview, DeBlois talked about the scene where the dragon Toothless and Hiccups have a fake face-off to show the dragon’s benefits to the fearful villagers. “It’s so dialled-up in terms of stakes — having a fully credible, photo-real dragon stomping around trying to kill him,” he said. He believes that the live action is more impactful both physically and emotionally.

While how the adorable dragon would look in the live action is yet to be known his partner and friend, the young Viking, Hiccup has a face. Mason Thames will portray the tradition-defying boy who wants to show his villagers that not all dragons are meant to be feared. DeBlois believes Hiccups as a character represents all the odd ones out there.

Talking about the young actor he said, “There was a bit of awkwardness, but also a vulnerability to him which came with the fact that he was 15 when we were auditioning him.” Mason is famously known for his role in The Black Phone.
