One of the main risks of too much sodium is high blood pressure (hypertension). Sodium causes the body to retain excess water, which increases the amount of blood in the bloodstream, putting added pressure on blood vessel walls. Over the time, this can lead to chronic hypertension, a leading factor in heart disease and stroke.

Excessive sodium also puts stress on the kidneys. The kidneys help to filter excess sodium from the blood, but when too much sodium is consumed, the kidneys struggle to keep up properly. This can also result in kidney damage and an increased risk of kidney diseases.

In addition to heart and kidney health, excessive sodium can also contribute to fluid retention, leading to bloating and swelling, especially in the lower extremities of the body. It can also worsen conditions and create miserable condition like osteoporosis, as high sodium levels can cause calcium to be leached from the bones.
