Mani Ratnam Supports Deepika Padukone’s Stand Amid ‘Spirit’ Exit Controversy

Veteran filmmaker Mani Ratnam has come out in strong support of Deepika Padukone following her much-discussed exit from Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s upcoming film Spirit. The actress reportedly walked away from the project after the producers declined her requests for an 8-hour workday, a ₹20 crore remuneration, profit-sharing rights, and the option to have her dialogues dubbed in Telugu rather than performing them herself.

Deepika’s stance—especially her demand for a standard 8-hour working schedule—sparked widespread debate across the industry, with some critics calling her expectations unrealistic. However, Mani Ratnam, known for his progressive approach to filmmaking and nuanced female characters, defended her position in a recent interview.

He stated that Deepika's demand is not only fair but also necessary, particularly in an industry that often overlooks work-life balance. "It is a rightful demand. I'm glad she's in a position to ask for it. As a filmmaker, you take that into account when you cast. It’s not an unreasonable thing to ask—it’s an absolute necessity," he said.

The controversy has brought to light the broader issue of work culture in the film industry, particularly for female actors and working mothers.

Mani Ratnam’s support, along with statements from other industry veterans like Ajay Devgn, reflects a growing acknowledgment of the need for structural changes in Bollywood. As the industry modernizes, conversations around humane schedules, actor well-being, and professional respect are becoming more central.

Following Deepika’s exit, actress Triptii Dimri has been cast in the role, but the conversation sparked by her departure—and the support it received—marks a significant moment for artist rights in Indian cinema.
