Kuch Kuch Hota Hai is a directorial debut film of the classic filmmaker Karan Johar, which starred Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol and Rani Mukerji as the main lead that released in the year 1998 and it is loved by generations even today.

Keeping aside all the good things about the movie's characters, songs, dialogues etc which are popular among the audience but several have always pointed out its wrong gender portrayals. And now, the director itself has opened up on the same during his recent promotional event that happened at IIMUN for his upcoming movie ‘Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahani’.

Talking about Kuch Kuch Hota Hai has “propagated wrong gender politics.” He said, 

“I feel like I have grown as an individual, The first film that I made, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, I firmly believe that the gender politics of that film was all wrong. It is propagating incorrect gender politics, there is a lot of surface ness in that film. Of course, there is nostalgia so you love it, but you don’t scratch the surface of the film and see that what Rahul is doing is actually not what I would want all the Rahuls in the audience, or all the boys in general, to do.”

Adding further Mr Johar slammed Rahul’s character who has done “all kinds of wrong things.” “Rahul was saying all kinds of wrong things. He said, ‘Hum ek bar pyaar karte hai (We fall in love once)’, but he got in love twice. He said, ‘Hum ek bar shaadi karte hai (We marry once),’ he got married twice. He was contradicting himself throughout the film,” he added.

On the work front, KJo is making his comeback in the director’s chair after seven long years since Ae Dil Hai Mushkil was released. His next directorial ‘Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahani’ is all set to hit the theatres on 28 July 2023, starring Alia Bhatt and Ranveer Singh in the lead.
