Amyloidosis is caused by the formation of an abnormal protein called amyloid in organs and tissues throughout the body. These proteins can be formed in different body parts like the heart, brain, kidneys, spleen, etc. This can further lead to organ failure as it becomes difficult for the tissues and organs to function properly, as per the National Health Service of the UK.

According to the study by Johns Hopkins Medicine, the cause of amyloidosis remains unidentified. However, it can primarily happen due to a mutation in a gene or secondary to a different health condition. There are three types of Amyloidosis one is Light-chain (AL) Amyloidosis, AA Amyloidosis and the third is Transthyretin Amyloidosis (ATTR).

The general symptoms of this disease as given by The Johns Hopkins are as follows:

  • Feeling very weak or tired
  • Losing weight without trying
  • Swelling in the belly, legs, ankles, or feet
  • Numbness, pain, or tingling in hands or feet
  • Skin that bruises easily
  • Purple spots (purpura) or bruised-looking areas of skin around the eyes
  • Bleeding more than usual after an injury
  • Increased tongue size
  • Shortness of breath

Unfortunately, currently, there is no cure for this deadly disease as amyloid deposits cannot be directly eliminated from the tissues and organs. But, there are other medicines and a treatment that is given by the doctor if amyloidosis is tested.
