Directed by Abbas-Mastaan, Ajnabee had everything going in its favor – Huge star cast, foot-tapping music, amazing trailer. The crime-thriller took a bumper opening at the box office. Though it could not sustain much at the ticket window, collecting Rs 17.04 crore against a budget of Rs 17 crore.  Akshay Kumar won his first Filmfare award as Best Actor In A Negative Role.

This Day That Year Box Office : When Phata Poster Nikhla Hero, Shakti, Lunchbox and Welcome To Sajjanpur Were Released On 20th September

A Hollywood remake of Jim Carry starrer Liar LiarKyunki..Main Jhuth Nahi Bolta suffered from poor direction and over the top acting. The movie did not open well thanks to clash with Ajnabee and was a “Flop” at the box office, collecting Rs 7.95 crore at a budget of Rs 8.50 crore.

Paanch (2003)

Directed by Anurag Kashyap, Paanch was officially the first film of the ace director before Black Friday. Unfortunately, the dark-thriller was banned at the time of release but finally made it the theaters in 2008. Paanch received some of best reviews in that year but due to no buzz around, the film sank at the box office.

Probably one of the most under-rated film of 2007, Manorama Six Feet Under was a fantastic who-done-it thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Admiring direction, beautiful screenplay, solid performances by the star cast will help to enjoy the film. However, due to low-key promotion, Manorama Six Feet Under flopped at the box office but gained a cult status later.

Heroine (2012)

Heroine was already in news even before its release. The controversy surrounding the film regarding the replacement of Aishwarya Rai with Kareena Kapoor created quite a stir. Directed by Madhur Bhandarkar, Heroine took a very good opening at the box office. Due to bad reviews, the film dropped heavily in its first week only and could not sustain later at the box office and did an average business with Rs 33.82 crore against a budget of Rs 35 crore.

Probably one of the most powerful role of Nawazuddin Siddiqui in 2018 apart from Sacred GamesManto told the story of controversial Pakistani writer Saadat Hasan Manto. Due to the low key promotion, Manto suffered at the box office, collecting Rs 3.39 crore.

Batti Gul Meter Chalu (2018)

Directed by Shree Narayan Singh, who earlier made the Akshay Kumar and Bhumi Pednekar starrer Toilet – Ek Prem KathaBatti Gul Meter Chalu was welcomed with good reviews. The comedy drama did open well but could not sustain at the box office. Owing to high budget, Batti Gul Meter Chalu did not work at the box office, mintng Rs 37 crore against a budget of Rs 49 crore.
