These comments, made at a Black journalists' event in Chicago, quickly went viral on social media, with critics condemning the former president for his racially insensitive remarks toward his opponent. When asked if he agreed with some Republicans who labeled Kamala Harris as a "DEI hire," Trump questioned her racial identity, asking, “Black or Indian?”

Trump continued by asserting that the vice-president-turned-presumptive Democratic nominee had only previously emphasized her Asian-American heritage. "She was always promoting her Indian background," he said. “So I’m unsure—Is she Indian? Or is she Black?”

Trump's statements led to a vigorous response from ABC News' Rachel Scott, one of the event's panelists. White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre also criticized the comments, calling them "repugnant" and "insulting."

"As a person of color—specifically, as a Black woman standing before you at this podium—what he said, and what you just read, is disgusting. It’s insulting, and no one has the right to dictate someone else's identity or how they identify," Jean-Pierre told reporters, according to CNN.
