The landslides ravaged hillside villages in the scenic Wayanad region.
Rescue efforts have been hindered by the destruction of the primary bridge in the area. The army has been deployed to construct a temporary bridge linking the disaster site to the nearby town of Chooralmala.
“The situation is critical. The government has mobilized all agencies for the rescue operation,” state forest minister A K Saseendran told Reuters.

At least 23 people have died and many others are injured following the landslides in the hills of Kerala’s southern state.
“The situation is dire. The government has activated all agencies for rescue efforts,” A K Saseendran stated to Reuters after the Wayanad district landslides.
Officials reported over 70 injuries, with many workers from the tea estates feared to be trapped.
