Student Visa Crisis: U.S. Takes Quick Actions to Revoke Certain Visas Overnight

International students in the United States are facing a range of difficulties that may result in the cancellation of their student visas. The F-1 visa, which allows foreign students to enroll full-time at accredited institutions under the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP), comes with a strict set of requirements that must be compulsorily adhered to in order to stay compliant.

Academic-Related Risks

1. Falling below the mandated course load can lead to visa cancellation, unless an exception is granted by the Designated School Official (DSO).
2. Being dismissed due to unsatisfactory academic performance or disciplinary issues can result in visa cancellation.
3. Any changes in course format, such as shifting to part-time, hybrid, or online formats, can badly affect visa status if not reported to SEVIS.

 Employment-Related Risks

1. Involving in work without the necessary Curricular Practical Training (CPT) or Optional Practical Training (OPT) authorization may lead to visa cancellation.
2. Employment or internships with sanctioned organizations—especially in fields like research, defense, or foreign funding—can jeopardize visa status.

Personal and Financial Risks

1. Failing to show adequate financial resources to support education can result in visa cancellation. Simply providing initial proof is insufficient.
   2. Submitting fraudulent documents, such as fake admission letters, test scores, or financial statements, can lead to visa cancellation.
   3. Avoiding to update residential or mailing information in SEVIS can result in non-compliance. Students are required to report any address changes within 10 days.
