The coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh are expected to experience a severe cyclonic storm as Cyclone Michaung makes landfall this evening. Michaung, the fifth tropical storm of the 2020 northeast monsoon season, has been intensifying over the past few days, leading to the warning issued by the Cyclone Warning Division of the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

Flood-like conditions are expected in the districts of Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, and Visakhapatnam as heavy rain and gusty winds accompanying the storm hit the region. The approach of the cyclone has already resulted in heavy winds and rain in the coastal regions of Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, and Visakhapatnam. Fishermen have been alerted not to venture out to sea during these dangerous conditions. The state disaster management authority has issued a red alert, and people in these areas have been advised to be on high alert and take necessary safety measures.

Michaung is the latest in the list of intense cyclonic storms that have been hitting the coasts of Andhra Pradesh since October. These storms, which are triggered by cyclones hovering around the Bay of Bengal, have caused a lot of disruption and distress to the lives of coastal Indians, especially within Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, and Visakhapatnam districts. However, scientific forecasters and meteorologists at the IMD and local disaster management centers have been closely monitoring the progress of the cyclone. An accurate weather helm and forecasting system has been put in place to ensure that the state is equipped to tackle any emergency that may arise out of this storm.

The government of Andhra Pradesh, in coordination with the national and state disaster management authorities, is doing its best to ensure that relief and rehabilitation efforts are swiftly initiated once Cyclone Michaung passes. Evacuation efforts have been started well ahead of time to ensure maximum safety of the residents of the coastal districts, and resources have been allocated to provide food and shelter.

The people of Andhra Pradesh have had to face numerous adversities in the past few months due to the approach of multiple cyclonic storms. However, despite the risks involved, the citizens of the affected districts are in high spirits as they stay aware and brace for the impact of Cyclone Michaung. We join hands in solidarity and pray for the safety of everyone in the coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh. #StaySafe
