Rohit Sharma overtook Babar Azam for a huge captaincy record as India defeated England in the T20 World Cup semi-finals. The win saw India book their place in the final, where they will face South Africa.
Rohit Sharma's victory also marked him as the most successful T20I captain with 49 wins, surpassing Pakistan's Babar Azam (48) for the highest number of wins as a T20I captain. The outcome extended India's second-longest winning streak in T20Is to 11 victories (from December 2023 to June 2024). Previously, their best streak was 12 wins, achieved between November 2021 and February 2022. Meanwhile, South Africa, finalists this year, lead with the most wins in a single T20 World Cup edition, securing 8* victories. India follows closely in second place with 7* wins.
After the match, India captain Rohit expressed, "Winning this game is immensely satisfying. Our team put in tremendous effort collectively. Achieving victory in this manner required a superb effort from everyone involved. We adjusted to the conditions admirably. Despite the challenging conditions, our ability to adapt has been key to our success thus far. We have managed the conditions adeptly and played accordingly."
"The bowlers and the batsmen, when they adapt to the conditions, everything falls into place, and that's precisely what occurred for us today. It's gratifying to witness our team's performance in this match. Initially, we were struggling at 140-150, but as the game progressed, Surya and I managed to accumulate runs in the middle overs. Our partnership was crucial, and we aimed for an additional 25 runs thereafter."
"We batted effectively, we assessed the conditions well, and we achieved a competitive total, just as we anticipated. We reached 170 runs, which I believed was an excellent score given the pitch conditions, and our bowlers performed exceptionally well," he remarked.
