Joe Biden and Donald Trump

Before the Joe Biden-Donald Trump presidential debate, it is anticipated that the January 6, 2021 Capitol insurrection and the "democracy threat" could dominate discussions. Biden has consistently emphasized in his campaign and public speeches that democracy faces a pivotal moment if Trump is re-elected. Trump, in contrast, holds a different perspective on this issue.

Earlier this year, Biden remarked in his State of the Union address, "Rarely in our history has our nation's freedom and democracy faced such a severe threat as they do today." During the upcoming debate, Biden will have his first chance to directly challenge Trump on his refusal to accept the election results, which precipitated the January 6 Capitol riot, along with other critical matters.

Both Trump and Biden view the January 6 riot as a pivotal issue in their 2024 campaigns, albeit with contrasting perspectives. Biden's campaign portrays Trump as a figure posing an existential threat to the nation's core values. Biden contends that under Trump, democracy itself is in jeopardy.

Amid his legal challenges, Trump has also told his supporters that he was indicted because "our adversaries aim to strip away my liberty." "I am being indicted for your sake," he recently asserted at the Faith and Freedom Coalition's conference in Washington. "Never forget our adversaries aim to strip away my liberty because I will never allow them to strip away your liberty. They seek to silence me because I will never allow them to silence you."

January 6 has served as a rallying point in Trump's campaign. He has assured supporters that he would pardon some individuals who were convicted or charged, and even hailed them as "patriots," "fighters," and "captives."
