The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) continues to face criticism. Frequent changes in board leadership and captaincy have drawn backlash, but a new issue has emerged. Reports from Pakistani media indicate that national team players, including stars like Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan, and Shaheen Afridi, have not received their salaries for the past four months. This situation extends to the Pakistan women's cricket team, which is also awaiting four months’ pay.
A total of 25 senior male cricketers were awarded three-year contracts effective from July 1, 2023, to June 30, 2026. However, these contracts are under review following the team's disappointing performance, according to a report from Cricket Pakistan.
"Last year, just before the World Cup, players urged the board to secure favorable contracts, but the current circumstances have shifted significantly. They haven't received their salaries for the months of July through October and have been left in the dark despite multiple reminders," the report stated.
"Moreover, sponsorship payments for the logos on their jerseys have also been overdue for several months," it added.
In a related note, a Cricbuzz report has mentioned that female players, who have been on a 23-month contract since August 21, 2023, are also waiting for their payments from the past four months. Their contracts were scheduled for review after 12 months, but that process is still ongoing.
"It is a work in progress. Once the lists are finalized and approved, contracts will be offered effective July 1, 2024," the board stated in the report.
As the Pakistan men’s cricket team prepares to face England in a three-match Test series at home starting October 7, the women's team is currently in the United Arab Emirates for the Women's T20 World Cup 2024, which began on October 3.
