Manu Bhaker's Surprising Absence in Khel Ratna Nominations Revealed

The year 2024 has been unforgettable for Indian sports, with several athletes showcasing their exceptional talent and bringing glory to the country. From India's outstanding victory at the T20 World Cup to Manu Bhaker's historic double medal win at the Paris Olympics, Indian sports have reached wonderful heights. As is customary, the Indian government will be presenting the prestigious Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award to honor the accomplishments of these athletes, and some of the nominees have already been revealed to everyone.

India men's hockey team captain and the well known drag-flicker Harmanpreet Singh has been recommended for the country’s highest sporting honor. In Harmanpreet's leadership, India got a bronze medal in men's hockey at the Paris Olympics.

Para-athlete Praveen Kumar also got  nominated for the Khel Ratna award. Praveen won a gold medal in the men’s high jump T64 class, and he set an Asian record at the Paris Paralympics.

It is a surprising thing, that India’s shooter and double-medal winner Manu Bhaker’s name is missing from the list of Khel Ratna recommendations. Officials from the sports ministry have explained that she did not apply for the award. Anyhow, a source quoted in the report mentioned that Manu's family elaborated that she had indeed submitted her application.

If any athlete has not registered for the award, then the selection committee can take a suo moto cognizance, depending on the achievements of the sportsperson.
