Jaiswal Poised for WTC Record That Kohli Didn’t Reach

Young Indian batter Yashasvi Jaiswal is just 132 runs away from making history in the ongoing World Test Championship (WTC) cycle. Jaiswal, expected to open the batting with captain Rohit Sharma in the two-Test series against Bangladesh starting September 19 in Chennai, has amassed 1,028 runs in the WTC 2023-25.

If he scores 132 runs across the two Tests, he will set the record for the most runs by an Indian batter in a single WTC cycle, surpassing former captain Ajinkya Rahane's 1,159 runs from the 2019-21 cycle. Jaiswal is one of only three Indian batters, alongside Rahane and Rohit, to accumulate 1,000 runs in a single WTC cycle.

Jaiswal also aims to surpass Joe Root, who leads the WTC 2023-25 runs chart with 1,398 runs. Jaiswal and England's Ben Duckett are tied for second with 1,028 runs each, needing 371 runs to overtake Root. Currently, the Indian cricket team leads the WTC standings with a points percentage of 68.52.

Their upcoming WTC series includes two Tests against Bangladesh at home, three Tests against New Zealand at home, and five Tests against Australia away.

Bangladesh is also in strong form, having recently completed a 2-0 whitewash of Pakistan, marking their first Test series win on Pakistani soil. The team achieved a 10-wicket victory in the first Test and a six-wicket win in the second.
