He becomes the third Indian to be part of an F1 team, following Narain Karthikeyan and Karun Chandhok. Additionally, Maini is the only Alpine F1 reserve driver currently competing in Formula 2, where he will race for DAMS Lucas Oil. After completing four test sessions with Alpine last season, his strong performances in 2024 could position him as a contender for a full-time seat in 2026.

Maini had an outstanding Formula 2 campaign last year, securing five podiums, including a standout victory in Hungary, and playing a key role in Invicta Racing’s Teams’ Championship triumph. He also made history in Jeddah as the first Indian to claim a Formula 2 pole position. Expressing his excitement, Maini described his appointment as a "once-in-a-lifetime opportunity" and a proud moment for him and his family, fulfilling his dream of representing India in Formula 1.

Alpine Academy Director Julian Rouse praised Maini’s performance in testing and Formula 2, emphasizing that his expanded role will enhance the team's talent pool. Meanwhile, his mentor, former F1 champion Mika Hakkinen, hailed the move as a significant milestone for both Maini and Indian motorsport, highlighting the young driver’s dedication and talent.
