Ahead of India’s opening match against Bangladesh in the Champions Trophy 2025, former captain Rohit Sharma appreciated his deputy, Shubman Gill, noting that his ODI statistics are "crazy," which played a significant role in his promotion to the vice-captaincy in this format. Rohit’s observation skills holds true. Even though Gill has faced challenges in Test cricket and has been outperformed by other openers in T20Is, he has proven to be a formidable force in ODIs, reminiscent of Virat Kohli, or perhaps even surpassing him, at least considering his impressive start in fifty-over cricket.
In his very 1st appearance in the Champions Trophy, Shubman Gill scored an unbeaten 101 off 129 deliveries, leading India to a successful start in a Group A match against Bangladesh in Dubai. His innings were important in helping India chase down a target of 229 runs in 46.3 overs, winning by six wickets.
Remarkably, it took him only 51 innings to achieve 8 ODI centuries, making him the fastest amongst all of the Indian batsmen. This is 6 innings fewer than Shikhar Dhawan, 17 fewer than Virat Kohli, & 47 fewer than Sachin Tendulkar.
It’s fair to say that Gill’s wonderful talent has truly flourished in the ODI format. Moreover, former Pakistan captain Mohammad Hafeez believes he is well-positioned to carry on Virat Kohli's legacy.
“For the past three years, since Shubman Gill came to this Indian side, he has been trying to be the next Virat Kohli. He is trying to take that legacy forward,” Mohammad Hafeez stated on “Game On Hai.”
