Kedarnath Temple, located in the Kedarnath region of Uttarakhand, India, is one of the holiest shrines in Sanatan dharma and is part of the Char Dham pilgrimage circuit. It is situated in the Himalayas at an altitude of 3,583 meters (11,755 feet), it is dedicated to Lord Shiva, one of the principal deities of the Hindu pantheon. The temple's origin is oftentimes attributed to the Pandavas from the Mahabharata. According to a legend, after the great war of Kurukshetra, the Pandavas sought the blessings of Lord Shiva to atone for the sin of killing their own kin. Lord Shiva, however, did not want to meet them and chose to hide in the form of a bull.
The Pandavas, who were in pursuit of the Lord, were able to trace him to a place now known as Kedarnath. There, Shiva, in his divine form, is said to have submerged himself into the ground, leaving behind a prominent part of his body — the hump, that is worshipped as the main deity in the temple.
The temple structure was built in the 8th century and is believed to have been constructed by the great sage Adi Shankaracharya, a key figure in the resurgence of Hindu philosophy during that period. He is credited with reviving the temple after it had fallen into neglect over many, many centuries.
