The Kamakhya Devi Temple, located in Guwahati, Assam, is renowned for its deep spiritual significance and the enigmatic phenomena associated with it. According to Hindu mythology, Lord Shiva's first wife, Maa Sati, was deeply in love with him. However, her father, King Daksha, disapproved of their marriage and insulted Shiva. In her fury and distress, Maa Sati immolated herself.

Heartbroken and devastated, Lord Shiva carried Maa Sati's body and wandered across the universe. Concerned for the world's well-being, Lord Vishnu intervened and used his divine discus to cut Maa Sati's body into 108 pieces. These pieces fell to earth, creating 108 sacred sites known as Shakti Peethas.

The temple, often referred to as the "Temple of Desires," is believed to fulfill the wishes of those who worship there. However, it is most famous for a unique and mysterious event that takes place every year. For three days in June, the temple doors are closed to the public. The reason for this closure lies in a profound and ancient legend involving Maa Sati, the first wife of Lord Shiva.

The Kamakhya Devi Temple is one such Shakti Peetha, believed to be the place where Maa Sati's womb and yoni (female genitalia) fell. It is this association that gives rise to the temple's most mysterious event. During the month of June, it is believed that Maa Sati undergoes her menstrual cycle, causing the temple's water to turn red. This phenomenon is seen as a  powerful symbol of the goddess's presence and her life-giving energy.

The temple remains closed for three days to honor this sacred event.  Devotees believe that the goddess herself is resting during this period. After the three days, the temple reopens, and the red water is collected and distributed among the devotees. This water is considered to have divine blessings and is highly revered.
