Wicked awarded Best Film by National Board of Review but netizens deny

The National Board of Review declared the film Wicked as the Best Film of the year 2024, taking the film a step towards the Oscars. However, The decision does not sit well with netizens, and they have a point. But the reasoning behind the award seems justified.

An adaptation of the renowned Broadway Musical of the same name, Wicked, directed by John M Chu, who has been awarded the Best Director of the Year by the National Board of Review. The musical film stars Pop Singer Ariana Grande and Broadway Icon Cynthia Erivo also awarded the spotlight for creative collaboration. 

“Wicked represents the pure magic that movies can bring to audiences. Every detail is beautifully crafted and designed, the actors are all exceptional, and the music is second to none — together it adds up to a transporting experience like no other. The NBR is proud to honour director Jon M. Chu and his remarkable cinematic vision," said the NBR President Annie Schulhof. 

However, netizens have a different opinion, and they believe that the decision is wrong. While most agreed that Wicked is a great cinematic masterpiece, looking at the kind of films NBR had awarded this title in the past, Wicked seems a bit out of the box. Previous winners include Silence of the Lambs, Killers of the Flower Moon, The Social Network, Green Book’, Schindler’s List, Forrest Gump and Pulp Fiction.

However, the decision is made, and most films that have won this title, have been nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars. The awards by the NBR will be awarded on January 5 at a grand gala.
