Just a few days into the release, multiple theatres issued a notice and urged fans not to sing during the screening because it would cause inconvenience to the other moviegoers. This is where the debate started, with fans countering that Wicked is musical in nature and it’s best enjoyed with a sing-along.

However, the debate didn’t go unnoticed by the cast. Cynthia Erivo, who played Elphaba, the Wicked Witch, recently attended the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, where she was asked if the audience should be singing in the theatres. “Good! I’m OK with it. We spent this long singing it ourselves, it’s time for everyone else to join in. It’s wonderful,” she said, ending the debate once and for all.

With this, the audience has a green light from the filmmakers to sing along during the film’s screening. Most people who sing during the film are theatre kids who grew up watching the Broadway Musical on which the film is based. The music from the movie is already loved by all, especially Defying Gravity, sung by Cynthia and Ariana Grande, which entered the Top 10 chart in the UK today.
