"I'm working late cause I'm a singer", words from her 'Song Of The Year' Single Espresso, sum up her situation this year. 2024 so far has been Sabrina's year from her Songs 'Espresso' and 'Please Please Please' winning song and video of the year to her album 'Short n Sweet' climbing charts and breaking records. And let's not forget her concerts. The Taste Singer has been performing at sold-out shows, yet somehow, the age-old enemy of womenkind comes to haunt her.

The Enemy is called "Modesty"

Sabrina has faced criticism from various groups, claiming her outfits to be provocative and her songs have sexual nuances. It's not good for the society and the kids watching her. The question arises of what's wrong with singing about pleasure or wearing whatever they want in a show that is attended by their fans. Emphasis on 'their fans'. She isn't wrong in any way and she knows that. In a recent interview, she mentioned how, to her, this is understandable, and she is going to follow in the footsteps of her icons.

Icons fallen from Grace

Sabrina isn't the first to face such criticism; in fact, these criticisms have been going on for generations now. Whether Christina Aguilera or Britney Spears, even Rihanna and Cardi B have dealt with such criticism. And all these legendary women ever did was express themselves in their songs and their bodies. But it becomes a problem for religious groups and people who have a very specific idea of what a woman should be. This idea or box is a part of the orthodox mindset that has always considered women to be inferior.

Britney Spears has been criticised for her fashion and songs for years, yet she never bothered to attend to these criticisms and that attitude is what made her the icon she is today. The same can be said for other artists like Christina, Rihanna and others.

Cardi B is another such artist who never cared about what people say about her form of expression. Instead, the 'Wap' singer has been very proud of her body and always finds a way to flaunt it. She even talked about this in her song 'Press' where she talked about how the media portrays her. Yes, the amount of self-love she shows can be narcissistic for many but this is what is needed to survive in this world.

It's the Hippocrates world

When a male singer in their songs objectifies a woman, curses non-stop, talks about genitals and sex, and even uses women as a sex appeal in their videos, it's considered music, and no objection ever arises. However when the same is done by a woman, suddenly all hell breaks loose. If a woman is dressing or singing in a certain way, it's considered provocative and bad. Why is the same not said about male artists? Well, the world's a hypocritical place where we support feminism on one end, saying that women have the right to expression, but on the other hand, criticise it when they try to express themselves.

Please Please Please

It's 2024 and yet we think that a woman needs to act in a certain way to be considered as modest and a 'Lady'. However, we give a pass to the men! "Don't Embarrass Me", as Sabrina said in one of her songs. This hypocrisy needs to change and Sabrina is now starting that change. Instead of just ignoring, she decided to answer. She said in an interview, that if someone finds her songs and shows inappropriate, they should just not listen or attend it in the first place. After all, it's the age of the internet, and everyone knows what to expect.

Getting offended by something is a choice, we can always just ignore something that isn't bothering us, however we choose to get offended by it. Here it is a rising star enjoying her fame and life, and we shouldn't have a problem with whatever she does until it directly causes harm to us.
