Bollywood was once a place where an actor was known by the movie they worked in but now that very same place is relying on the actors to sell their films. This is one of many reasons why Bollywood as a film industry is falling to the bottom when it comes to film.
Think about what your favourite Bollywood film is, something that you watch as a comfort film. Chances are most of you will think of a film that came during the 2000’s or before. There are many reasons as to why this is a thing. Why are most fans not enjoying the content that the film industry is offering? Following are the reasons that I believe are the cause for the fall of this industry from its glory.
Age Old Curse of Formulas
What took the Bollywood film industry to its peak was the concept of formula films. Films that follow a pattern that the audience finds intriguing and fun. The angry young man, the love triangle, the rural to urban and the social injustice are just some of the major formulas that were developed. However, this blessing soon became a curse since every other film was based on these formulas. The worst was that the industry had been too stubborn to change. Even now, most commercial films are still based on these age-old formulas.
Lack Of Originality
Today, many Hindi films are just remakes or based on older films or films from other industries. The industry doesn't seem to have any more ideas left with them. The fact that the big production houses of the film industry have resorted to re-releasing old films with a nostalgia value instead of new content proves my point. Films like Singham, Tere Naam, De Dana Dan to Singham Returns, Bhool Bhulaiyaa and Dhrishyam are all remakes.
The Hunger For, Larger Than Life
The film industry has saturated its catalogue with so many films that revolve around larger-than-life stories and characters. This is to a point where the value of a larger-than-life character has reduced to just another character. Not all films and their characters are supposed to be larger than life. It's good for Brahmastra but is completely unnecessary for a film like Bhool Bhuliayaa 3.
The Certificate Board is More like the Censor Board
The main job of the Certificate Board is to provide a film with a certificate based on the content it contains. However, it started suggesting cuts that would give the film a more universal certificate. This creates a problem as filmmakers start making films based on what would get them a universal certificate. This means the filmmakers will choose not to touch political or triggering topics to maximise profit.
Actors are the Face, Not The Plot
One major reason why Bollywood is falling is because they are selling films based on their actors rather than the plot or the characters. Only fresh artists are working in plot and character-driven films, and all the other major artists are now used for their name and fanbase.
