In 2014, the Modi Government introduced the National Unity Day, also called Rashtriya Ekta Diwas, a day to commemorate the birth of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. He was the first Home Minister and Deputy Prime Minister of India and is credited with merging over 550 princely states into the Union of India. Hence, this day is observed as a promise to the nation to maintain its unity, integrity, and security.

As part of the celebrations, Unity Run, a marathon, is organised where people from all walks of life can run for unity. Home Minister Amit Shah flagged the Marathon in Delhi, where 7,700 people participated. During his speech, he emphasised that the Unity run is not only a resolution of the Unity of India but also a resolution of Viksit Bharat.

He also explained the reason behind pre-poing the Unity Run. According to him, National Unity Day is celebrated on 31 October, but since this year the day clashes with Diwali, Prime Minister Modi announced the run to be organised on 29 October instead.

Along with him, Chief Ministers of Uttar Pradesh, Gujrat, Rajasthan, Odisha, Tripura, Karnataka, Jharkhand and Jammu and Kashmir also flagged off the marathon. Jharkhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami participated in the marathon.

The Unity Run is important because during this marathon, people from all walks of life, from politicians to social workers, can participate and run together, showcasing the spirit of unity. Those who can’t run participate in community service and volunteering.
