An Oklahoma man has been charged with first-degree murder in connection to the deadly shooting of a Catholic priest at a church rectory in northeast Kansas, authorities reported on Friday.
Officers reacting to Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Seneca on Thursday afternoon discovered Arul Carasala with gunshot wounds outside the rectory, as said by the Nemaha County Sheriff's Office in a Facebook post. The fifty-seven--year-old priest was transported by ambulance to a hospital, where he later died.
Following the situation, sheriff's deputies and Seneca Police Department officers apprehended Gary Hermesch of Tulsa, Oklahoma. Hermesch, 66, was formally charged on Friday & is currently being held in the Nemaha County Jail on a one million dollar bond, according to a written statement from County Attorney Brad Lippert.
The charging document indicates that Hermesch "intentionally and with premeditation" murdered Carasala, Lippert noted. He did not respond to phone calls or emails on Friday seeking further information.
