A sharp criticism and fat-shaming comment made by Congress spokesperson Shama Mohamed about Team India captain Rohit Sharma has sparked a wave of backlash on social media. Responding to her post on X, users have flooded the comments section with statistics showcasing India's success under Sharma’s leadership, often referring to him as "Hitman" for his batting achievements, in an attempt to challenge Mohamed's remarks.
Her remarks quickly faced strong criticism, especially from BJP leaders and cricket enthusiasts. In reply to a user who hailed Sharma as a "world-class player," Mohamed rejected the assertion, challenging his legacy in comparison to Indian cricket legends such as Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, and Kapil Dev. "What is so world-class about him when compared to his predecessors? He is a mediocre captain as well as a mediocre player who got lucky to be the captain of India," she wrote.
The BJP quickly denounced Mohamed's comments, accusing the Congress of "body-shaming" and showing disrespect towards a World Cup winner. Radhika Khera, a BJP leader who recently switched from Congress, criticized her former party for "This is the same Congress that humiliated athletes for decades, denied them recognition, and now dares to mock a cricketing legend? The party that thrives on nepotism is lecturing a self-made champion?" Khera said.
The remark has prompted a strong response from the ruling BJP, which questioned whether the Congress now expects Rahul Gandhi to take up cricket."Shame on Congress! Now they are going after the Indian Cricket Captain! Do they expect Rahul Gandhi to now play cricket after failing in Indian politics," BJP spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari said in reply to the Congress leader's post. Speaking to NDTV, Mr Bhandari said the Congress spokesperson's remark reflects the party's Emergency mindset. "It's an insult to every patriot who supports the Indian cricket team through thick and thin. I question the Congress's criticism," he said.

in a subsequent clarification, Ms. Mohamed compared Rohit Sharma to former captain Virat Kohli, noting that Kohli always praises fellow cricketers."I just spoke in a generic manner. I fail to understand how in a democracy, we don't have the right to speak," she said.
