At least 30 armed individuals carried out a heist at a cold storage facility in Ibban Kalan village, making off with dry fruits valued at Rs 2 crore. The robbers detained the watchmen at gunpoint during the night between Tuesday and Wednesday.
The perpetrators also stole the CCTV cameras and the digital video recorder (DVR) from the facility. Despite ongoing investigations, the police have yet to identify the culprits, though they have not ruled out the possibility of insider involvement.
Charanjit Singh, SSP of Amritsar (Rural), stated, “A case has been registered following a preliminary investigation. We have launched further inquiries to identify and apprehend those responsible.”
Facility owner Happy Arora revealed that the cold storage held dry fruits for 100 grocery store owners from the Majith Mandi area. Four watchmen were stationed to protect the facility. On the night of the robbery, more than 30 people arrived in two trucks, took the security guards hostage, and loaded the stolen dry fruits into the trucks before fleeing in the early hours.
The SSP mentioned that insider involvement in such a significant theft could not be excluded. Police are exploring various leads and examining footage from nearby CCTV cameras to gather clues about the perpetrators.
