LOTR WOTR Review

Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim is a perfect prequel to the original trilogy, with animations authentic to old-school Japanese anime. The film successfully added lore to the existing story while still being original.

Most credit should be given to Director Kenji Kamiyama, renowned for directing multiple anime movies over the years. He brought his exceptional directing skills to the table, elevating the cinematic experience of the film. While the film was visually pleasing, sticking to old-school stop-motion animations in a world where smooth animations dominate was risky. This animation style could pull the audience out of the illusion, but that’s very subjective.

Another problem with the film was its pace. The story starts slow in the first half, which makes it a bit boring, but it picks up speed towards the end of the first half. If you’re a fan of epic battles, then the first half would be boring for you since its main job is to set the characters and the world.

But here’s the good part: It established Middle Earth so well, whether it's the kingdom of Rohan or its people and creatures. By the end, it connects with the original trilogy ever so smoothly. Apart from that, the story itself was simple yet impactful. However, it had some loose ends at the start that could have been worked upon.

Set 200 years before the trilogy, the film has a story that can stand on its own but also adds more context to the trilogy. It follws Hera, the princess of Kingdom of Rohan who is known to be wide and carefree, but is strong enough to save her enitre kingdom from the looming treat.
