Earlier on Wednesday, Biden was seen in Las Vegas where he met with supporters and participated in a public event. However, he later cancelled a scheduled campaign speech for that evening.

The news of his illness comes amid rising calls for him to consider stepping down from his presidential bid due to concerns over his age. Reports indicate that Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Majority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, the two highest-ranking Democrats in Congress, both met with Biden privately to express their worries that his candidacy might harm the Democratic party’s chances in other Congressional races.

Jean-Pierre also noted that while the president will isolate at his home in Delaware, he plans to continue fulfilling his responsibilities as president from there.

Dr. Kevin O’Connor, the president’s physician, reported that Biden is showing upper respiratory symptoms, including a runny nose and a cough, and has started his first course of Paxlovid. Dr. O’Connor mentioned that Biden felt well during his first public engagement of the day but later tested positive for Covid-19.

Following the diagnosis, Biden took to X/Twitter to express his gratitude for the support he has received and assured the public that he would continue working for the American people as he recovers. In a subsequent tweet, his account remarked, "I’m sick," followed by a comment expressing frustration with Elon Musk and his efforts to influence the election, encouraging supporters to contribute to his campaign.
