India Wins Over Hong Kong in Asian Women's Handball Championship

India kicked off their campaign in the 20th Asian Women's Handball Championship (AWHC) 2024 with a hard-fought battle of 31-28 victory over Hong Kong on Tuesday.

The triumph was mainly attributed to standout performances from Bhawana Sharma and Menika. India stood strong, with Priyanka Thakur scoring the first goal of the tournament, building on her iconic role in India’s historic victory at the 2022 Asian Women's Junior Handball Championship.

Soon after, seasoned player Menika got on the scoreboard, giving India some benefit. Our Indian team also showcased strong defense, holding off Hong Kong's attacks. Captain Diksha Kumari, a gold medalist at the SAF Games, played a significant role by saving 3 penalties in the first half, helping India to a 16-10 lead at the break. 

After a while, Hong Kong mounted a stronger offensive, increasing their efforts to gain attacking momentum. Anyways, India remained firm in defense and capitalized on counter-attacks with clinical precision, keeping Hong Kong at bay.

At last, India sealed the win confidently, with Bhawana adding the Player of the Match award to her Junior Championship honors.
