Opinion: Is Cameos The New Formula For Box Office Success?

The film Industry is changing constantly, and filmmakers follow the trends to make their films a success. The new trend that the Indian film industry has been following is of having star studded cameos. In most of the recent films that have been box office successes, majority of the films have had cameos of other popular actors. Even though the storyline and execution might be good, the use of cameos enhances the effect the film has on audiences, and all people talk when they leave cinema halls is about the special appearances in the film, and they also recommend the films for others to watch.

Stree 2

While Stree 2 already had much anticipication among the fans, what made watching the movie more interesting was its cameos. Fans had already suspected Varun Dhawan's appearance in the film due to the Stree-Bhediya-Munjya universe, and though it was entertaining, the most surprising aspect of the film was Akshay Kumar's role. The film has crossed box office collection of 400 crores and expected to earn more.

Tu Jhoothi Mai Makkar

Tu Jhoothi Mai Makkar starring Shraddha Kapoor and Ranbir Kapoor is directed by Luv Ranjan who has collaborated on multiple projects with Kartik Aryan and Nusrat Bharucha, and both of them had special appearances in the film, making the film more fun to watch and collected 220 crores worldwide.

Jawan 

Shah Rukh Khan's Jawan was a huge success, and contributed greatly in reviving Bollywood after the pandemic, had the box office collection of 1,148.32 crores. This film also had a power pact cameo of Sanjay Dutt. 

Kalki 2898 AD

Kalki was one of the most anticipated films of 2024 with a star studded cast including Prabhas, Kamal Hassan, Amitabh Bachchan and Deepika Padukone. But it also had variou cameos from stars like Mrunal Thakur, Dulquer Salmann, S.S Rajamouli, Ram Gopal Varma and Vijay Deverakonda. The film had a total collection of 1200 crores worldwide. 

Pathaan

One of the initial films to start this trend was Pathaan, with a special appearance from Salman Khan's characater, Tiger, from films, Ek Tha Tiger and Tiger Zinda Hai. Some fans went to watch the film just to witness the two iconic characters interact, and to watch two great actors on screen. This cameo also hinted at and was the beginning of the YRF Spy Universe. Pathaan had a box office collection of 1,050.30 crores.
