In the third and final game of the series against England, India's vice-captain Shubman Gill extended his stellar limited-overs record by hitting his eighth ODI century. With a Test and T20I century under his belt, Gill made a spectacular comeback to his happy-hunting field, the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. In the IPL, where he captains the Gujarat Titans, Gill has also amassed three hundreds at the stadium.

Even after skipper Rohit Sharma was dismissed in the second over of the innings, the young player continued to play brilliantly. Gill restored the Indian innings with Virat Kohli (52) who also made a much-needed comeback to scoring runs. Gill punished the England bowlers' sloppy deliveries, achieving his century in 95 balls.

Gill displayed his signature fluency at a location he was familiar with. Despite the early loss, he resisted allowing England to take charge and launched a barrage of boundaries in the overs immediately following Rohit's dismissal. As he and Kohli gradually established a solid framework, his intention ensured India never lost steam. Gill remained in control of the bowling attack even after Kohli left, undeterred by the increased responsibility.

As the fastest hitter to reach 2500 ODI runs, the milestone man also made history throughout his effort. He broke the long-standing record set by the renowned South African, Hashim Amla, after reaching the milestone in just 50 games, three fewer than the former player.

In addition, this was Gill's third consecutive half-century in the series, joining a select group of batters who have scored fifty runs in each of a bilateral series' three games. The youthful opener, however, wasn't finished yet.

On his 95th delivery, Gill finally reached his century with a spectacular four-ball flip against Mark Wood. However, he greeted the stadium audience and made his signature bow towards the dressing room, so the festivities were subdued.

He became one of just a select few batters to reach the three-figure mark in all three formats at a specific location with his century. It's interesting to note that just four hitters have done it before:

  • Faf du Plessis - Wanderers, Johannesburg
  • David Warner - Adelaide Oval
  • Babar Azam - National Stadium, Karachi
  • Quinton de Kock - Supersport Park, Centurion
  • Shubman Gill - Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad
