Indian cricketer Yuzvendra Chahal and dancer Dhanashree Verma have officially ended their marriage, with their divorce being granted on March 20, 2025. The couple, who tied the knot in 2020, had been living separately for nearly two years before reaching a legal settlement. Their separation has sparked discussions, particularly regarding the alimony agreement and reactions from the cricketing fraternity.
The Bandra Family Court formally approved the divorce, confirming that Chahal and Dhanashree are no longer married. According to a Bar and Bench report, Chahal has agreed to pay ₹4.75 crore in alimony as part of the settlement. Of this, ₹2.37 crore was paid before the court hearing, with the remaining amount to be settled later. Considering Chahal’s busy schedule, especially with IPL 2025, the Bombay High Court directed the Family Court to expedite the proceedings. Since the couple had already been living apart for an extended period, the legal formalities were completed efficiently.
The hefty alimony settlement between Yuzvendra Chahal and Dhanashree Verma has ignited discussions on social media, with users sharing diverse opinions. A video posted by Shubhankar Mishra has gone viral, questioning the idea of empowerment through financial settlements. The controversy deepened when Ritika Sajdeh, wife of Indian cricket captain Rohit Sharma, ‘liked’ the Instagram post criticizing Dhanashree, further fueling the debate.
In the video, Mishra argued that true empowerment shouldn’t be tied to accepting large financial settlements, stating, “If money equates to strength and independence, then one cannot claim to be self-made while taking such a huge sum.” He further remarked, “If Chahal wore a T-shirt saying ‘Be your own sugar daddy’ or if people labeled her a gold digger, she shouldn’t be offended since she accepted the money.”
Ritika’s reaction to the post has sparked mixed reactions among fans, intensifying the ongoing debate over the issue.
On the very day her divorce was finalized, Dhanashree Verma released her latest music video, Dekha Ji Dekha Maine. The song explores themes of infidelity and toxic relationships, depicting a woman trapped in a troubled marriage. Fans were quick to draw parallels between the storyline and Dhanashree's personal life, fueling speculation that the video might reflect her real-life experiences.
When asked about her feelings post-divorce, Dhanashree gave a cryptic response, choosing not to directly address the question. Instead, she simply said, "Gaana suno pehle," which translates to "Listen to the song first."
