Yuzvendra Chahal and Dhanashree Verma, separated for over two and a half years, sought a waiver of the mandatory six-month cooling-off period under Section 13B of the Hindu Marriage Act, citing "compatibility issues" as the reason for their divorce. Justice Madhav Jamdar directed the family court to decide on their petition by March 20, considering Chahal’s IPL commitments.

Chahal emerged as the highest-paid spinner in IPL 2025, securing a ₹18 crore contract with Punjab Kings. The court also took into account their extended period of separation and the fact that both parties had already settled the alimony matter during earlier mediation sessions. According to Section 13B(2) of the Hindu Marriage Act, a family court can review a mutual divorce petition only after a six-month waiting period, allowing the couple time to explore the possibility of reconciliation or settlement.

In a 2017 ruling, the Supreme Court stated that the six-month cooling-off period could be waived if both parties had no disputes regarding the settlement. On February 20, the family court rejected Yuzvendra Chahal and Dhanashree Verma's request, citing Chahal’s partial fulfillment of the settlement terms. While he had agreed to pay ₹4.75 crore in alimony, only ₹2.37 crore had been paid at the time of the hearing. Additionally, a marriage counselor reported that Chahal had not fully complied with the agreed-upon conditions, as per report.

The Bombay High Court allowed Yuzvendra Chahal to pay the remaining alimony as a permanent settlement after the divorce. Chahal and Dhanashree Verma, who married in December 2020 and separated in June 2022, sought an exemption from the six-month cooling-off period in February 2025. Their divorce was surrounded by public speculation, with rumors about the settlement and alimony. Dhanashree later denied claims that she had demanded ₹60 crore.

"We are deeply outraged by the baseless claims being circulated about the alimony figure. Let me be absolutely clear—no such amount has ever been asked, demanded, or even offered. There is no truth to these rumours whatsoever. It is deeply irresponsible to publish such unverified information, dragging not just the parties but also their families into unnecessary speculation."
