John Abraham says male actors demanding huge remuneration is "hurting" Hindi cinema. The actor, who's been a part of the business for more than two decades believes apart from content, a major issue that's plauging the film industry right now is the amount paid to the leads. During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, John stated, "We should be paying people to act in a film because we don't justify those huge budgets and fees that we get paid. "John said "boarding a film with an entourage cost as well is ridiculous." He however added, "I don't know whether the actor is not thinking or his agent is making a big difference. I understand that you're put in a bubble, but you can't be so daft. You need to get out, see the real world. If people are blowing sunshine up your backside, you need to wake up, smell the coffee,".
John made his acting debut with the film Jism in 2003, after a successful modelling career. He became part of Dhoom, Dostana, Garam Masala, Housefull 2 and more before turning a producer with a small film and a new cast, Vicky Donor in 2012. This encouraged big actors to support small budgets with a good storyline and plot.
In the interview, John asserted how it becomes the onus of such stars to bring the much needed change in the system. "As an industry, we're really, really suffering. What are we going to do to make amends? The first thing is by cutting your personal costs down. I'm a lead actor and I'm telling you that," he said.
According to John, actors also need to be aware that if a director feels they aren't worth the money they ask for, they must accept it. "You need to understand, comprehend, take it into confidence. I believe I'm worth this much, but yes, if you're saying I'm not, I get it. We don't have that thought yet," he explained. "We always compare ourselves with other actors. We always want to broadcast our fee, which I think is the worst thing to do," the Parmanu actor opined. He shared, "What an actor should be doing at this point is say 'Hey listen, we're down in deep black hole. Let's work on the film, on the back end and see if the film makes profit, because we've earned our billions out of this.' How much more are you going to suck the system dry?"
