Director Kiran Rao’s Laapataa Ladies has been selected as India’s official entry for the Best Foreign Film Category 2025 at the 94th Academy Awards. Pratibha Ranta, who played the character Jaya in the movie, came forward with a statement following the release of this news.
Pratibha Ranta debuted in the Hindi film and television industry with the television series Qurbaan Hua. Laapataa Ladies was her first Bollywood film, for which her acting was applauded by the audience and critics.
“I’m beyond excited that ‘Lapataa Ladies’ has been chosen as India’s official entry to the Oscars! This film holds a special place in my heart, especially my character, Jaya. I believe, the story beautifully resonates with audiences worldwide, showcasing themes of love, loss, and the search for Individuality. It’s a celebration of our culture and an invitation for international viewers to experience the richness of Indian storytelling. I’m grateful to be part of such an important project!”, she said when asked about her debut film entering in Oscars 2025.

Producer Amir Khan posted a statement, "We are all so happy with the news. I am so proud of Kiran and her entire team. Laapataa ladies about a twist in events, two newlywed brides inadvertently get exchanged. Both women go through a rollercoaster of comical misadventures because of this. The film was produced by Amir Khan, Jyoti Deshpande and Kiran Rao in an estimated budget of Rs. 4 to Rs. 5 Crore.
