A special film festival has been organized by PVR-Inox for Bollywood star Aamir Khan, to commemorate his contributions to the film industry. The film festival is called, “Aamir Khan: Cinema Ka Jadugar”.
At the press conference for the film festival, lyricist and screenwriter, Javed Akhtar, who moderated the session asked Aamir Khan why South Indian films are working in theatres, while Hindi films are struggling, to which Khan replied, “One of the reasons also is that writers or directors in Hindi perhaps have been trying to entertain an audience which is slightly finer. They've forgotten their roots. There are finer emotions, then there are baser emotions.”
Khan continued, “We’re not focusing on the broader strokes like anger, love and revenge. We should make films on conviction. South films are what we used to call single-screen films, very mass, very rooted. Maybe Bollywood is focusing more on multiplex films.”
“We’re telling our consumers that you can come and consume our product. If you don’t, we’ll bring it to you in eight weeks, when it will be free of cost as you’ve already paid for it. I don’t know how to sell a product twice. Earlier, I used to watch movies because I had no option. Now, it’s dependent on a fancy for films. So we’ve killed our own business model.”
The rise of the South Indian Cinema is a concern for the Hindi filmmakers, as the audience now prefers to spend their money on the South films, while the Hindi films become commercial failures. But, this can be changed in the future if only the approach to filmmaking becomes evolved.
