Probably one of the most memorable partition film of Indian cinema, Gadar Ek Prem Katha shattered all the box office records when it clashed with Aamir Khan starrer Lagaan in 2001. With 1947 India-Pakistan as background, Gadar-Ek Prem Katha was the love story, directed by Anil Sharma and starred actors like Sunny Deol, Ameesha Patel and Amrish Puri in key roles. The movie was “All-Time Blockbuster” earning a massive Rs 77 crores (approx) against a budget of Rs 19 crores.

Panchayat 2 Review – More Lovable Characters Makes It “A Must Watch” Drama

Though the starting of the century saw a big disappointment in form of Mela (2000), the year 2001 belonged to Aamir Khan where he played the role of a villager, Bhuvan, who fought against Britishers in the cricket-match drama, Lagaan, directed by Ashutosh Gowarikar. Aamir Khan third clash with the mighty Sunny Deol starrer Gadar-Ek rem Katha, again proved lucky (after Dil-Ghayal clash in 1990 and Raja Hundustani-Ghatak war in 1996) for him as it won critical acclaim for his role. Lagaan, was a risky subject which paid off as the cricket-drama collected a very good Rs 34 crores against a budget of Rs 20 crores.
